Aarhus University (Danish: Aarhus Universitet, abbreviated AU) is a public research university located in Aarhus, Denmark. Founded in 1928, it is Denmark's second oldest university and the largest, with a total of 44,500 enrolled students as of 1 January 2021.
History
The university was founded on 11 September 1928 and was a response to the increasing need for higher education institutions in Denmark. The university was modelled on the most advanced universities of the time, with a commitment to the principle of academic freedom.

The main campus of Aarhus University is located in Aarhus, with additional campuses in Herning and Copenhagen. The Aarhus campus is notable for its architectural design, which was influenced by the ideas of the Danish architect C.F. Møller.
