Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan
Plot
"Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan" is a 1982 American science fiction film directed by Nicholas Meyer. It is the second film in the Star Trek film series, and is a sequel to the 1967 "Star Trek" episode "Space Seed". The film's plot features Admiral James T. Kirk (William Shatner) and the crew of the starship USS Enterprise facing off against the genetically engineered tyrant Khan Noonien Singh (Ricardo Montalbán), who seeks revenge upon Kirk.
The film opens with the USS Enterprise undergoing a training mission under the command of Lieutenant Saavik (Kirstie Alley). However, the ship is ambushed by Klingon vessels and the crew is seemingly killed. This is revealed to be the Kobayashi Maru, a training simulation designed to test Starfleet officers' character in a no-win scenario.
Production
"Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan" was produced by Paramount Pictures. After the mixed critical and commercial response to the first film, "Star Trek: The Motion Picture", Paramount decided to approach the sequel differently. Instead of retaining the same team, they hired a new director, Nicholas Meyer, who was relatively unknown at the time. Meyer had never seen the original "Star Trek" series and brought a fresh perspective to the film.
