Head (company)

History

Head N.V. is a sports equipment and clothing company, known for their production of tennis and skiing equipment. The company was founded in Delaware in 1950 by aeronautical engineer Howard Head, after he took a trip to the mountains and was surprised to see wooden skis being used in an era where metals and plastics were replacing wood in many other industries.

In the early years, Head faced significant challenges. The first models of Head's innovative metal skis were not successful; however, Howard Head did not give up on his idea. He continued to experiment with different materials and designs, eventually creating a ski that was lighter, stronger, and more responsive than traditional wooden skis. This ski, known as the Head Standard, revolutionized the ski industry and set the company on a path to success.

In 1969, Head was acquired by AMF, a company known for its production of bowling equipment. Under AMF, Head expanded into tennis equipment, introducing the first metal tennis racquet, the Head Competition, in 1971.

In the following decades, Head continued to innovate and expand. The company was sold to Minstar Inc. in 1985 and then to Tyrolia AG in 1989. In 1993, it was acquired by Johan Eliasch, a Swedish businessman, who continues to serve as the company's CEO.
