Alpensia Resort
Overview
Alpensia Resort is a multi-purpose winter sports resort located in the county of Pyeongchang, in the province of Gangwon-do, South Korea. The resort is a major tourist attraction and has been a key venue for international winter sports events, including the 2018 Winter Olympics and the 2018 Winter Paralympics. The resort features a variety of facilities, including ski slopes, a ski jumping stadium, a cross-country skiing course, and a biathlon center.
History
The Alpensia Resort was developed as part of South Korea's successful bid to host the 2018 Winter Olympics. The construction of the resort began in 2004 and was completed in 2011. The resort was designed to be a year-round tourist destination, with facilities for winter sports as well as golf and other outdoor activities.
Facilities
The Alpensia Resort comprises six main facilities: the Alpensia Ski Resort, the Alpensia Cross-Country Skiing Centre, the Alpensia Biathlon Centre, the Alpensia Ski Jumping Stadium, the Alpensia Sliding Centre, and the Alpensia Olympic Park.
Alpensia Ski Resort
The Alpensia Ski Resort is the main attraction of the Alpensia Resort. It features six slopes for skiing and snowboarding, with runs suitable for beginners, intermediate skiers, and experts. The resort also includes a ski school for those new to winter sports.
Alpensia Cross-Country Skiing Centre
The Alpensia Cross-Country Skiing Centre was one of the venues for the 2018 Winter Olympics. It features a variety of trails for cross-country skiing, ranging in difficulty from beginner to expert.
Alpensia Biathlon Centre
The Alpensia Biathlon Centre is a venue for biathlon, a winter sport that combines cross-country skiing and rifle shooting. The centre features a shooting range and a variety of trails for the skiing portion of the biathlon.
Alpensia Ski Jumping Stadium
The Alpensia Ski Jumping Stadium is a venue for ski jumping events. The stadium features two jumps, a large hill and a normal hill, and has a seating capacity of 11,000 spectators.
Alpensia Sliding Centre
The Alpensia Sliding Centre is a venue for bobsleigh, luge, and skeleton events. The centre features a track that is 1,376 meters long with a maximum gradient of 9.48%.
Alpensia Olympic Park
The Alpensia Olympic Park is a multi-purpose facility that was used for the opening and closing ceremonies of the 2018 Winter Olympics. The park includes a plaza, a music fountain, a sculpture park, and a variety of other facilities.
Events
The Alpensia Resort has been a venue for numerous international winter sports events. The most notable of these was the 2018 Winter Olympics, during which the resort's facilities were used for a variety of events, including alpine skiing, cross-country skiing, biathlon, ski jumping, bobsleigh, luge, and skeleton.
