Northern Kentucky University

History

Northern Kentucky University (NKU) is a public university located in Highland Heights, a suburb of Cincinnati. The university was founded in 1968, although its roots trace back to the early 20th century with the establishment of its predecessor, the Salmon P. Chase College of Law.

In its early years, NKU was primarily an undergraduate institution with a focus on liberal arts and sciences. However, over time, the university expanded its academic offerings to include graduate programs and professional degrees. Today, NKU offers more than 70 bachelor's degrees, over 20 master's degrees, and several doctoral programs.

Campus

NKU's campus spans over 400 acres and features a mix of traditional and modern architecture. The campus is divided into several areas, including the academic core, residential areas, and recreational facilities. The academic core houses the majority of the university's academic buildings, including the W. Frank Steely Library, the largest library in the region.

The residential areas of the campus include several residence halls and apartment complexes, providing housing for over 2,000 students. The university's recreational facilities include a fitness center, an aquatic center, and numerous sports fields and courts.

Academics

NKU is organized into seven colleges: the College of Arts and Sciences, the Haile/US Bank College of Business, the College of Education and Human Services, the College of Health Professions, the College of Informatics, the Salmon P. Chase College of Law, and the Honors College. Each college offers a range of undergraduate and graduate programs in various fields of study.

The university is known for its strong programs in business, education, nursing, and informatics. NKU also offers unique programs in areas such as electronic media and broadcasting, environmental science, and health informatics.

NKU places a strong emphasis on experiential learning, with numerous opportunities for students to engage in research, internships, and study abroad programs. The university also offers a variety of online and hybrid courses, catering to the needs of non-traditional students and working professionals.

Student Life

NKU has a vibrant student life, with over 200 student organizations, including academic clubs, service organizations, cultural groups, and Greek life. The university also has a strong athletics program, with its teams, known as the Norse, competing in the NCAA Division I Horizon League.

The university also offers a range of support services for students, including academic advising, career services, and mental health resources. NKU is committed to fostering a diverse and inclusive campus environment and offers numerous programs and initiatives aimed at promoting diversity and inclusion.

Community Engagement

NKU is deeply committed to community engagement and public service. The university partners with local organizations and businesses to provide experiential learning opportunities for students and to contribute to the economic, social, and cultural development of the region.
